Binance Hack: $6.3B Breach, What Users Must Do

The Binance hack is no longer a rumor moving through trading chats. Binance has confirmed a security breach at the worlds largest crypto exchange and put the estimated total impact at about $6.3 billion, a figure Reuters calls the biggest crypto heist ever recorded. About $3 billion of the assets have been frozen so far, withdrawals are paused, and Binance says it will cover all losses. If you hold any crypto, on any platform, this is the morning to understand where your money actually sits. Our Crypto hub tracks stories like this one in a single place.

Binance Hack: What Binance Has Confirmed

Here is what the company itself has said. The estimated total impact sits at around $6.3 billion. Binance worked with blockchain partners to freeze affected assets, with about $3 billion frozen so far, and it gave no update yet on the remaining $3.3 billion. Cofounder Yi He said the company would cover all hacking losses, from its SAFU emergency fund and from company funds, adding that user funds are safe. Deposits and withdrawals are temporarily suspended while security teams complete checks, and law enforcement partners are tracing the funds. Binance also promised an updated proof of reserves once the cleanup is complete.

On how it happened, treat every detail as early. Binance said its initial investigation suggests a compromised laptop belonging to one of its DevOps engineers let an attacker reach a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The exchange said it has found no evidence of any wallet private key leak. Analysts quoted by Reuters were more cautious. Chainalysis said at least $5.912 billion was confirmed stolen as of 8:30 PM ET on Thursday, moving across Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tron, Ripple and several Layer 2 networks, and its head of research said the cause cannot yet be confirmed.

How Big $6.3 Billion Really Is

Scale is the story here. The previous record for a crypto theft was the February 2025 attack on Bybit, which took about $1.5 billion in ether. The Binance figure is more than four times that size, and it lands at the exchange that was supposed to have the deepest defenses in the industry.

The freeze operation shows both the strength and the limit of the current system. Tether said it froze nearly $1.57 billion in assets linked to the incident, Circle froze more than $800 million, and Ripple froze roughly $200 million. Stablecoins can be frozen because an issuer controls them. Bitcoin cannot be frozen that way, which is why part of the stolen bitcoin may sit still for a long time. CNN reported that tracing firms TRM Labs and Pangolin Intelligence point to an elite North Korean hacking unit as the likely actor. That is an attribution from private firms, not a confirmed official finding.

One detail deserves your attention more than the blame debate. CoinDesk reviewed Binances own reserve data and found that Binance 14, the hot wallet at the center of the attack, appears in its October 1 proof of reserves, which means the stolen crypto formed part of the assets backing customer balances. CoinDesk estimated the ether taken leaves ether backing near 94 percent, and noted the SAFU fund holds around $1 billion in bitcoin. That is why the November 1 reserve snapshot matters: it will show whether Binance has replaced what was taken.

What the Breach Did to Prices Within Hours

Markets did not wait for the full report. Bitcoin fell to a low not seen in six weeks and was last down 3 percent at $76,469.82 in the Reuters analyst roundup, while ether was down more than 3 percent at $2,185.83. Shares of Coinbase slid 4.8 percent and shares of Strategy fell nearly 6 percent in extended trading. Spreads on spot bitcoin ran about five times wider than normal at one major market maker, so anyone selling in a hurry paid a steep price for the exit.

The deeper risk is liquidity, not just price. Binance sits at the center of crypto trading volume, and when the largest venue pauses withdrawals, firms that move capital between exchanges cannot rebalance. Our earlier coverage of Bitcoin ETF inflows and what drives fund demand showed how much of this market now runs through regulated funds, and days like this explain why some investors prefer that route. A fund can fall in price, but your shares are not sitting inside the hacked wallet.

The Lesson Every Crypto Holder Should Take From This

An exchange is a marketplace, not a vault. You hand an exchange your coins so you can trade them, and in return you accept the risk of its systems, its staff laptops and its internal controls. That bargain is easy to forget during quiet months, which is exactly when it grows dangerous. Mt. Gox taught this lesson in 2014, Bybit taught it again in 2025, and Binance has now taught it at four times the size. The coins were not broken. What failed was custody, the layer between you and your assets.

Separate promises from proof. Binance has promised to cover all losses, and its scale makes that promise plausible, but a promise is a statement, not a balance. Proof looks like withdrawals fully restored, a reserve snapshot that shows backing back at full strength, and a technical report that explains the failure in plain terms. Until those things exist, the honest position is that the story is still open. Also know which company you actually use: Binance.US, a separate exchange, said it was not affected by this incident.

Expect the second wave. Big hacks are followed by fake support accounts, fake refund pages and messages that ask you to verify your wallet on a lookalike site. The trick is the one we teach in our guide to how an AI voice scam targets a family: create panic, rush the victim, and move the money before anyone checks. Binance will never need your password, your seed phrase or a fee to release your own funds. Any message asking for those things is theft wearing a help desk costume.

What Binance Users Must Do Now

Do these things today, in this order. First, save your own records: download your balances and transaction history while you can still see them. Second, use only official Binance channels for updates, and type the address yourself instead of tapping links in messages or social replies. Third, review your account security: a unique password, two factor authentication turned on, the phishing protection code set, and your withdrawal address list restricted to wallets you control. Fourth, decide your custody on purpose: trading balances can live on an exchange, but savings you cannot afford to see frozen for weeks belong in a wallet you control. Fifth, watch the two proof points, restored withdrawals and the November 1 reserve snapshot, before you treat this incident as closed.

Your takeaway is simple. Hold exchanges to evidence, keep records they cannot edit, and never let one company hold enough of your money to wreck your plan.
