Binance Hack North Korea: FBI Confirms TraderTraitor

The question behind every binance hack north korea search finally has an official answer. On Saturday the FBI said North Korea was responsible for the theft of more than $6 billion in virtual assets from Binance, the largest crypto exchange in the world, in what it called the biggest crypto theft on record. Until now, that link rested on research firms reading blockchain trails. Now it rests on a federal alert with names, wallet addresses and instructions for the whole industry. Our Crypto hub keeps the full story in one place as the recovery moves into its most important day.

Binance Hack North Korea: What the FBI Said

The alert, published by the FBI Cyber Division on October 31, says the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was responsible for the theft from Binance on or about October 29, 2026. The bureau gives the North Korean malicious cyber activity a name, TraderTraitor, the same label it used for the group behind the $1.5 billion Bybit theft in February 2025. CoinDesk reports that TraderTraitor is a subunit of the Lazarus Group, the North Korean hacking operation blamed for a long run of exchange thefts.

Working with the United States Secret Service and the IRS Criminal Investigation division, the FBI says it has observed TraderTraitor actors converting the stolen assets primarily into Ethereum. The bureau expects the assets to be laundered further through decentralized finance platforms and instant swap services. North Korea has denied using state linked cyber units for theft in the past, and its missions did not respond to requests for comment, Reuters reported. President Donald Trump, asked about the hack on Saturday, said his administration would talk to North Korea about it.

Read the shift carefully. A private firm attribution is an opinion, however strong the evidence behind it. A federal attribution is a policy fact. It puts sanctions, seizures and diplomacy on the table, and it changes how every exchange, payment service and trading desk must treat any coin that touched this theft.

The Wallet List Is the Action Item

The alert is not just an accusation. It carries a list. The FBI published the wallet addresses it says are holding or have held assets from the theft: more than 600 Ethereum addresses, just under 20 Bitcoin addresses and a single Solana address, according to CoinDesk. The three agencies urge node operators, instant exchanges, DeFi services, blockchain analytics firms and other virtual asset service providers to block transactions with or derived from those addresses.

That request matters more than it may look. Chainalysis chief executive Jonathan Levin told CoinDesk the attackers have already used thousands of addresses and that he expects tens of thousands in the coming weeks, as the stolen money spreads through a wider laundering network using automated tools that circulate funds between wallets to obscure the trail. In plain terms, the stolen coins are being chopped into smaller and smaller pieces and pushed toward everyday services. Stablecoin issuers have already frozen more than $2.4 billion of the stolen funds, but the rest is still moving.

For ordinary holders, the lesson is about taint. Coins that passed through flagged wallets can get frozen when they reach a regulated exchange, even in the hands of someone who had nothing to do with the theft. If a stranger offers you crypto at a suspicious discount, or an unknown token lands in your wallet uninvited, treat it as contaminated until proven otherwise. Do not move it, do not swap it and do not try to spend it.

Withdrawals Resume With 95 Percent Covered

While the FBI named the thief, Binance raised the number that decides whether customers get their money back. Reuters reported on November 1 that Binance will resume withdrawals in phases after covering 95 percent of the $6.3 billion in stolen tokens, up from the 90 percent figure in the Saturday update covered in our Binance hack update on the road to Sunday. The first phase starts between 0600 and 0900 GMT on Sunday and covers bitcoin, ether, BNB, Solana, XRP, dogecoin and other tokens. The remaining 5 percent is made of less liquid tokens that Binance says may take longer to source in the amounts it needs.

Ninety five percent is real progress, and it is still a company figure. The test our earlier coverage set still stands, and the first Binance hack post laid out why proof matters more than promises. Withdrawals that actually arrive in user wallets are the first proof, and they begin this morning. The full cryptographic proof of reserves, the version that lets each user verify that their own balance is inside the reported numbers, is expected by November 3. That is the second proof, and it is the one that turns a press release into evidence.

Markets, for now, are calm. Bitcoin traded near $77,800 early on Sunday and Ethereum near $2,265, both slightly higher on the day. A calm price is not an all clear signal. It only means the panic selling has paused while the verification work continues.

What Crypto Holders Should Do Today

Here is the usable part. First, if you hold funds on Binance, use the phased windows as they open and start with a small test withdrawal to a wallet you control, confirming the address on a second device before you move a larger amount. Second, keep your own records of balances and transaction IDs, because screenshots and exports are your evidence if any step stalls. Third, ignore every message that offers to speed up a refund, unlock a withdrawal or verify your wallet for a fee. The FBI attribution will be used as bait by impersonators within hours, and that message is the second theft trying to follow the first. Fourth, if you accept crypto in a business, screen incoming payments against the FBI address list before you treat the money as yours.

The bigger lesson is the one this whole week keeps teaching. An exchange balance is a promise, and promises are only as good as the proof behind them. Official answers, published addresses, working withdrawals and a proof that includes your own balance are what turn a promise back into money. Judge every platform you use by that standard, not by its size and not by its slogans.
