Job Openings September 2026 Surge as Quits Jump

Job openings september 2026 just delivered the surprise of the fall. Employers posted far more openings than any forecaster expected, workers quit their jobs in much bigger numbers, and layoffs fell. All of that landed in one report on Tuesday morning, in the same month when payroll growth looked weak. If you have been waiting for a sign about whether this job market still rewards a move, this report is the clearest one in months, and it points in a direction many workers were not expecting.

Job Openings September 2026 Beat Every Forecast

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the September JOLTS report on Tuesday, November 3. Job openings rose by 333,000 to 7,523,000 on the last business day of September. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 7,100,000 openings, so the actual number beat the forecast by more than 400,000. August openings were also revised up to 7,190,000 from the 7,079,000 first reported, which means the starting point was stronger than anyone knew.

The openings rate rose to 4.5 percent from 4.3 percent in August, and the September level is the highest since May. Openings also moved back above the number of unemployed workers, by roughly 414,000, which works out to about 1.05 openings for every unemployed person. Professional and business services added 106,000 openings, and state and local government added 108,000. Our Money hub tracks releases like this one in a single place, so you can follow the pattern instead of chasing each headline on its own.

The Quits Number Is the Real Story

Openings tell you what employers want. Quits tell you what workers believe, and workers sounded confident in September. Quits rose to 3,365,000, up sharply from 3,044,000 in August and well above the 2,990,000 recorded a year earlier. People rarely leave a paycheck voluntarily unless they believe another one is waiting. A jump of this size says a large number of workers looked at this market and decided the risk of moving was worth taking.

The rest of the report supports that reading. Hiring increased by 131,000 to 5,402,000, and the hires rate rose to 3.4 percent. Layoffs and discharges fell by 127,000 to 1,641,000, and the layoff rate eased to 1.0 percent. Employers are posting more jobs, filling more of them, and letting fewer people go, all in the same month. That combination is hard to argue with, and it is the opposite of what a weakening labor market looks like.

Why Openings and Payrolls Can Both Be True

One number seems to fight the rest of this report. Payrolls grew by only 29,000 jobs in September, and the unemployment rate held at 4.2 percent. Both things can be true at once. The payroll report counts jobs actually filled during the month. The JOLTS report counts demand at the end of the month, including openings employers had not yet filled. A market can hire slowly in one month while demand for the next month builds underneath it.

Two cautions belong here. First, the JOLTS survey has a low response rate, and BLS itself treats single month readings as prone to noise, so one strong month is a signal and not a verdict. Second, September is now two months old, and the October jobs report arrives this Friday, November 6. That report will either confirm the strength JOLTS is pointing to or show that September demand cooled as fast as it rose. Context from the same morning leans toward strength, though. The Census Bureau reported factory orders up 1.8 percent in September against a 1.2 percent forecast, and our coverage of the employment cost index and pay that fell behind prices showed the wage side of this same market still trailing inflation.

What This Means for Your Money and Your Next Move

Start with the lesson. Bargaining power follows openings and quits, not headlines about a single payroll month. When openings rise and quits surge, employers compete harder for people, and that competition is what produces raises, signing offers and better schedules. Our look at PCE inflation and what rising prices do to a paycheck showed prices still rising faster than many wages, which makes this window matter even more. Standing still in a market like this one quietly costs you money every month.

There is also a rate angle to watch. A labor market that stays firm gives the Federal Reserve less reason to lower rates quickly, after it held its benchmark at 3.75 to 4.00 percent on October 28. That means borrowing costs on mortgages, car loans and credit cards may stay high for longer, even as job prospects improve. Good news for your income can be slow news for your debts, and a sound plan has to hold both truths at once.

Do these four things this week. First, if you are employed and underpaid, update your resume now and test the market while openings sit at their highest level since May, because leverage like this fades without warning. Second, if you are job hunting, aim at the sectors adding openings, led by professional services and government, and apply while posting volume is rising. Third, whatever you earn, route any raise or new salary first to your highest interest debt and your emergency fund, in that order. Fourth, put Friday morning on your calendar and check the October jobs report before you make any big move based on one report.

The workers who gain the most from a market like this are rarely the loudest. They are the ones who read the signal early, prepare quietly, and act while the openings are still on the board.
