2027 Tax Brackets: IRS Raises Every Threshold

The 2027 tax brackets are now official, and every worker in America should know where they land before the new year begins. The IRS announced the new thresholds on Thursday, raising every bracket by about 3.2 percent and lifting the standard deduction for every filing status. The rates themselves did not move. What moved is how much income fits inside each lower rate before the next rate takes over. That sounds like a small technical change, and for one paycheck it is small. Across a full year of work, and across the choices you make about extra income, it is real money that rewards people who plan early.

What the 2027 Tax Brackets Actually Say

Start with the rates, because they are the part that stayed put. For tax year 2027 the federal rates remain 10 percent, 12 percent, 22 percent, 24 percent, 32 percent, 35 percent and 37 percent. The top rate of 37 percent now begins above $661,375 of taxable income for single filers and above $793,650 for married couples filing jointly. For single filers, the 35 percent rate begins above $264,550, the 32 percent rate above $208,325, the 24 percent rate above $109,125, the 22 percent rate above $52,025 and the 12 percent rate above $12,800. The first $12,800 of taxable income for a single filer sits in the 10 percent rate.

Married couples filing jointly get thresholds that are double the single amounts at most levels. Their 10 percent rate covers the first $25,600 of taxable income, the 12 percent rate begins above $25,600, the 22 percent rate above $104,050, the 24 percent rate above $218,250, the 32 percent rate above $416,650 and the 35 percent rate above $529,100. Remember what a bracket means in practice. You never pay one rate on all of your income. Each slice of income is taxed at its own rate, so a raise that pushes you into a higher bracket taxes only the new dollars at that higher rate. Our Money hub tracks releases like this one together so you can see how tax, pay and rate news fit into one picture.

The Standard Deduction and Credits Rose Too

The standard deduction is the amount most families actually feel, because about nine in ten taxpayers take it instead of itemizing. For 2027 it rises to $16,600 for single filers and for married people filing separately, up $500 from 2026. It rises to $33,200 for married couples filing jointly, up $1,000, and to $24,925 for heads of household, up $775. Personal exemptions remain at zero, as they were for 2026. The separate deduction of $6,000 for each eligible taxpayer age 65 or older continues through 2028, and that amount is set by law rather than adjusted for inflation.

Families get a little more as well. The maximum child tax credit rises to $2,300 for 2027, up $100, and the refundable portion rises to $1,800. The maximum earned income tax credit reaches $8,496 for taxpayers with three or more qualifying children, up from $8,231. The cap on the state and local tax deduction gets its own small adjustment to $40,804 for 2027, which matters most to itemizers in states with high income and property taxes. For wealthier households, the estate tax exclusion rises to $15,480,000 and the annual gift exclusion rises to $20,000 per person. None of these changes is dramatic on its own. Together they form the full price sheet for earning, giving and passing on money in 2027.

One timing point prevents the most common mistake readers make with this news. These 2027 figures apply to income you earn during 2027 and to the return you file in 2028. They do not change the return you file early next year, because that return covers tax year 2026 and uses the 2026 amounts of $16,100 single, $32,200 joint and $24,150 for heads of household. Your Florida property bill follows a different calendar entirely, and our guide to the Florida homestead exemption for 2027 covers who qualifies and which dates matter on that side.

Why a 3.2 Percent Shift Deserves Your Attention

Here is the lesson in the middle of the table. Bracket adjustments exist to stop a quiet tax increase called bracket creep, where inflation pushes your pay up on paper while your real buying power stays flat, and the tax code then takes a bigger share of income that never really grew. A 3.2 percent adjustment, after a rise of about 2 percent for 2026, tells you the IRS formula is now seeing firmer inflation than it did a year ago. That is the same pressure households feel at the store, arriving in tax form.

The practical effect is modest but real. More of your 2027 income will be taxed at lower rates than it would have been without the adjustment, and your take home pay should edge up slightly once withholding tables catch up, even if your salary never changes. The workers who gain most are the ones near a bracket edge, because a threshold that moved past their income keeps a planned raise, bonus or side income stream taxed at the lower rate for longer. This is also why the news pairs well with the tight labor picture in the jobless claims report at a 57 year low. Pay is holding up, jobs are unusually secure, and now the tax code gives a small extra reward to added income earned in 2027.

Four Moves to Make Before January

First, find your bracket. Take your expected 2027 taxable income, after the standard deduction, and see which rate your last dollars fall into. That marginal rate is the number that should guide every extra income decision next year. Second, plan added income with the new thresholds in view. Overtime, a bonus, freelance work or a small business profit that lands just below the next threshold keeps more of its value, so timing invoices and payments where you lawfully can is worth real money. Third, leave your withholding alone until the new tables arrive early in 2027, then check your first paychecks and adjust if too much or too little is coming out. A refund that arrives in 2028 is a loan you gave away during 2027. Fourth, if you itemize or live in a high tax state, run the state and local tax math again with the $40,804 cap before you assume the standard deduction still wins.

Small official numbers rarely get the attention that market crashes do, and that is exactly why they reward the few people who read them. The code just told you, a full year early, what your work will be worth after tax in 2027. Use that head start.
