ADP Jobs Report: 86,000 Jobs Beat Forecasts

The ADP jobs report for October landed this morning with a number stronger than anyone on Wall Street expected. Private employers added 86,000 jobs last month, beating every published forecast, which ran from 65,000 to 75,000 depending on the survey. It is the second solid month in a row, and September was revised to 86,000 as well, down from the 90,000 first reported. If you have been reading headlines about a frozen job market, this report pushes back on that story. Hiring did not stall in October. It spread across company sizes and across most of the country, and the pay data underneath the headline carries a lesson worth your attention before the official government report arrives on Friday.

What the ADP Jobs Report Actually Says

ADP counts real payrolls. The report is built from the anonymized weekly payroll records of more than 26 million private sector workers in the United States, produced with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab. That makes it an independent read on hiring, not a survey of intentions. Services did almost all of the work, adding 82,000 jobs, while goods producing industries added just 4,000. Trade, transportation and utilities led with 39,000 new jobs. Education and health services added 28,000, leisure and hospitality added 19,000, and financial activities added 15,000. Construction added 13,000, a bright spot inside an otherwise flat goods side, where manufacturing lost 1,000 jobs and natural resources and mining lost 8,000.

The regional picture was just as uneven. The South added 47,000 jobs and the West added 28,000, while the Midwest added 9,000 and the Northeast added only 3,000. Employers of every size hired. Medium sized firms led with 33,000 jobs, small firms added 28,000, and large firms added 24,000. Our Money hub tracks releases like this one in a single place, so you can follow the pattern across months instead of reacting to one headline at a time.

The One Sector That Keeps Shrinking

One line in this report should temper the celebration. Professional and business services lost 27,000 jobs in October, and that is the third straight month of losses for that sector. Information lost 2,000 jobs as well. Put together, the pattern is clear. The jobs being added are concentrated in health care, logistics, hospitality and finance, while office based professional work keeps contracting. That split matches what Tuesday brought from the government, when our coverage of the job openings September 2026 report showed openings climbing back to 1.06 for every unemployed person. Openings exist. They are just not sitting in the same industries that are cutting, and that mismatch is why so many workers feel stuck in a market that the headline numbers call healthy.

If your own work sits in a shrinking sector, the takeaway is not panic. It is positioning. Skills that transfer into health care support, logistics management, compliance and financial operations are where the hiring budgets are flowing right now, and October is the second month confirming that direction rather than a single odd print.

The Pay Story Hiding Inside the Report

The most useful number in the release is not the headline. It is the pay gap between people who changed jobs and people who stayed. Base pay rose 3.2 percent over the year for all workers. For job stayers it rose 3.0 percent. For job changers it rose 4.8 percent. Gross pay tells an even stronger story. Gross pay rose 4.7 percent overall, 4.4 percent for stayers, and 7.6 percent for changers. ADP chief economist Nela Richardson said employers of all sizes were hiring last month, and that job changers were drawn by a combination of bonuses, overtime and more hours on top of higher base pay. She said earnings growth for those workers hit its fastest pace since March 2024.

Read that against the inflation picture. Our recent look at the employment cost index and wages lagging prices showed yearly pay growth falling behind consumer prices for workers who stay put. October says the market is still paying a premium to people willing to move. That does not mean everyone should quit this week. It means your current pay deserves a market check, because the raise for switching is running well ahead of the raise for waiting, and your employer knows those numbers too.

Why Friday and the Fed Matter More Than Today

ADP is a signal, not the final word. ADP itself has a mixed record as a predictor of the official report, and the two measures can diverge sharply in any given month. On Friday the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the October employment report, and a Reuters survey expects nonfarm payrolls to rise 65,000 after just 29,000 in September, with the unemployment rate unchanged at 4.2 percent. A strong Friday print on top of today would change the math in Washington. The Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.75 percent to 4 percent on October 28 in a 10 to 2 vote, and the two voters who dissented wanted a raise, as our Fed rate decision coverage explained at the time. A labor market that keeps adding jobs at this pace, with pay for changers accelerating, gives the Fed little reason to cut and some reason to talk about raising again in December. For households, that means mortgage rates and credit card rates are unlikely to bring relief soon, and budgets should be built on the rates that exist today rather than the rates people hope for next year.

What to Do With This Report This Week

Do three things before Friday. First, if you have been in the same role for more than two years, price your job in the current market. Look at live listings for your title in the sectors that added jobs in October and compare the posted pay with your own. Second, if you carry variable rate debt, assume it stays expensive into next year and put any extra cash against the highest rate balance first. Third, if you are job hunting, aim your applications where the hiring actually is. Trade, health care and finance added a combined 82,000 service jobs in this report while professional services cut again, so let the data choose your target list instead of habit.

Better decisions start with reading the whole report, not just the headline number. The headline says hiring beat forecasts. The details say where, for whom, and at what pay, and those details are what your next money move should rest on.
