Stock Market Today: Dow Surges After Midterm Sweep

If you opened your 401(k) this morning and saw green everywhere, you were not imagining it. The stock market today delivered one of its biggest one day jumps of the year after Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate in the midterm elections. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped about 1,500 points in midday trading, the S&P 500 rose about 1.8 percent, and the Nasdaq Composite gained about 2 percent. A move like this raises a fair question for every household with money in the market. Should you do something, or should you do nothing at all? The honest answer starts with what actually drove the rally.

What happened in the stock market today

The Associated Press called both chambers of Congress for the Democrats on Wednesday morning, ending the unified Republican control of Washington. President Donald Trump remains in the White House, so the country now has a divided government, and the new Congress takes office on January 3. Stocks first fell overnight as results came in, with Nasdaq futures down as much as 2.4 percent at the lowest point. Then buyers stepped in hard once the full sweep became clear. The Dow opened about 1,000 points higher and kept climbing into midday, reaching its highest level in two months and putting it on pace for its best day since April, according to CNN. The VIX, the fear gauge traders watch most, sank about 16 percent as the uncertainty that hung over this market for weeks finally lifted. Oil fell hard as well, with Brent crude slipping below 100 dollars a barrel at one point on hopes that the new political map could cool the conflict with Iran. The dollar eased about 0.5 percent, and the yield on the 10 year Treasury note held near 4.92 percent.

Why stocks rose after the midterm sweep

Markets hate open questions more than they hate almost any answer. For weeks the open question was who would run Congress, and what that would mean for taxes, tariffs, spending, and the rules around artificial intelligence and crypto. A divided government usually means fewer big sudden policy swings, because each side can block the other. That calm is what investors bought today. Morningstar strategist Dan Lefkovitz made the simple point that the results put an end to uncertainty, and markets generally welcome that. The rally also arrived on top of a still solid economy. This morning the ADP report showed private employers added 86,000 jobs in October, beating forecasts, and a separate services survey showed that sector still growing, even though prices inside that report stayed hot. If you want the hiring detail, read our breakdown of the ADP jobs report for October. Strong hiring plus political clarity is a mix stocks tend to like, at least for a day.

What history says about markets after midterms

Here is the lesson hiding inside the noise. Election results feel enormous in the moment, but markets have a long habit of shrugging and moving higher once the votes are counted. Morningstar looked at 100 years of stock returns and found that stocks in election years rose about 2.4 percent in November on average, compared with about 0.9 percent in years without an election. A CNBC analysis of every election from 1980 to 2024 found the S&P 500 was higher one year after all 11 midterms from 1982 to 2022, with an average gain of 13.7 percent. Years that ended in divided government did even better on average, at about 15 percent. None of that guarantees a repeat. It does explain why selling in a panic on election night has so often been the wrong move. The market prices in fear before the vote and relief after it, and households that trade on headlines usually end up buying high and selling low. Our breakdown of job openings in September told the same story from the labor side. Workers were quitting with confidence long before anyone knew how Tuesday would end.

What to do with your 401(k) and savings now

So what should you actually do today? Start with nothing dramatic. A one day surge is not a signal to pour new money in, and it is not a signal to pull money out either. Use the calm to do the quiet work that actually builds wealth over time.

Check your mix. If stocks have run for months, your 401(k) may hold more stock risk than you planned. If your target mix has drifted by five points or more, rebalance back to the plan you set when you were calm.

Leave your contributions alone. Keep your automatic deposits running at the same rate. Buying steadily through calm weeks and stormy weeks alike is the whole point of the system.

Protect your cash first. A rally does not fix a thin emergency fund. If your savings cover less than three months of bills, send extra cash there before you add a single dollar of extra stock risk.

Know the next tests. Friday brings the October jobs report, and the Federal Reserve meets again on December 8 and 9. Either one can move markets more than today did. Our Money hub gathers the data stories that matter most for household budgets in one place.

The takeaway is simple. The stock market today rewarded clarity, not a party. Your plan should reward the same thing. Know your mix, keep your contributions steady, guard your cash, and let loud days pass without touching the steering wheel. That is how ordinary households turn market noise into real progress.
