Bitcoin ETF Outflows Hit $635M in One Day Reversal

Bitcoin ETF outflows just erased most of the good news crypto investors celebrated earlier this week. United States spot Bitcoin funds recorded a net outflow of $635.6 million on Thursday October 22, according to flow data from Farside Investors and SoSoValue reported early Friday. The selling was not spread evenly. BlackRock and its iShares Bitcoin Trust, known by the ticker IBIT, lost $254.1 million in one session, and Fidelity and its FBTC fund lost $217.5 million. Together those two funds accounted for about 74 percent of the entire outflow, a reminder that this market now moves through a very small number of very large doors.

What the Bitcoin ETF outflows reversed

Put Thursday beside the three sessions that came before it and the reversal comes into focus. On Monday October 19 the funds took in $526.7 million, a day this site covered when Bitcoin ETF inflows hit $527M as IBIT led the category. Tuesday added a quiet $23.2 million. Wednesday added another $524.8 million, with IBIT taking in $235 million and FBTC taking in $212.7 million. Across three sessions investors put about $1.075 billion into the funds, and the October total finally turned positive after a weak start to the month.

Thursday gave back about 59 percent of that three day gain in a single session. ARK and 21Shares and its ARKB fund lost $109.4 million. Grayscale and its GBTC fund lost $29.5 million, and Bitwise and its BITB fund lost $27.4 million. Morgan Stanley and its MSBT fund was the only product to add money, and it added just $2.3 million. Even after the outflow, the four sessions still ended with a combined net inflow of $439.1 million, and the category still holds $104.7 billion in total net assets, equal to 6.41 percent of the total value of all Bitcoin in circulation. One loud day changed the direction of the week. It did not erase the scale the funds have built.

Ether funds kept bleeding while Bitcoin turned

Ether told a grimmer version of the same story. United States spot ether funds recorded a net outflow of about $111 million on Thursday. BlackRock and its ETHA fund lost $75.5 million, and its staked ether fund lost another $17.2 million, while Fidelity and its FETH fund added only $2.37 million. Add Thursday to the month and ether funds have now lost more than $1 billion in October, wiping out the inflows they collected in September. Bitcoin traded below $82,000 as the flow numbers landed, touching a low near $80,820 before changing hands near $81,400 early Friday, down from levels near $85,000 reached earlier in the week. The price slide arrived on the same day United States stocks sold off sharply in technology shares, which fits a familiar pattern. When investors cut risk in one place, they usually cut it in several places at once, and crypto sits near the front of that line.

Why flows follow price more than they lead it

Here is the lesson most flow headlines leave out. New research from DWF Labs, reported this week, studied 694 trading days since spot Bitcoin funds launched in January 2024 and found that fund flows mostly follow price moves that already happened. The link between daily flows and price moves over the prior five trading days was 0.54. The link between flows and price moves over the following five trading days was just 0.03. In plain language, investors in these funds tend to buy after Bitcoin rises and sell after Bitcoin falls. Flows confirm the weather. They rarely forecast it.

That finding changes how you should read a number like $635.6 million. Thursday selling does not prove that smart money knows a deeper fall is coming. It mostly proves that holders reacted to a falling price, a weak day for stocks, and a tense week for oil and interest rates by trimming the easiest position to trim. A fund share can be sold in seconds inside a brokerage account, with no wallet and no exchange account to manage. That convenience is exactly why these funds gather so much money on good days, and it is also why they can lose so much money on bad ones. Our Crypto Hub keeps this kind of context in one place so a single session never has to carry more meaning than it deserves.

What this means for your money

Start by separating two decisions that headlines try to merge. The first decision is whether Bitcoin belongs in your plan at all, and at what size. The second decision is which tool you use to hold it, a fund share in a brokerage account or coins in your own wallet. Thursday changed neither answer for a disciplined investor. It changed only the mood, and mood is the most expensive input in any portfolio because it pushes people to buy comfort at high prices and sell fear at low ones.

A single day of redemptions can reflect profit taking after a strong run, a risk limit being enforced, or a hedged trade being closed, where an investor held fund shares while selling Bitcoin futures to capture a price gap. DWF Labs estimated that about one fifth of all flows may be hedged in that way. None of those reasons tells a household investor to copy the trade the next morning. The caution that applied on Monday, when inflows were a thermometer and not a steering wheel, applies with equal force when the thermometer falls.

There is also a product lesson in the concentration numbers. If you own a smaller fund, read its assets and its daily volume before you need to trade, because thin products can trade away from the value of the coins behind them during stressed sessions. Large institutions keep reshaping this market in slower ways too, as our coverage of JPMorgan bringing its deposit token to Ethereum shows.

Your move this week

First, check your actual crypto share of your total portfolio today, not the share you intended when you bought. Price swings change the math while you sleep. Second, if that share has drifted far from the limit you set, bring it back in steps rather than in one emotional trade. Third, write down the price move or the time interval that will trigger your next review, and ignore flow headlines until that trigger arrives. Fourth, keep money you need within the next year out of crypto entirely, in ordinary savings where a week like this one cannot reach it. A written rule will not make Bitcoin less volatile. It will make your response to that volatility a decision you already made, instead of a reaction you later regret.
